We are transparent in relation to our charges as will be seen below.
There are now potentially a number of ways in which to fund the provision of legal advice and assistance.
Initial interview
The starting point for the provision of legal services is the face-to-face interview. For initial interviews held at our offices with the Principal Solicitor we charge as follows:
• ½ hour interview: £75
• 1 hour interview: £125
• 2 hours interview: £200
Sometimes all the substantive issues can be discussed at the initial meeting, advice given and any follow-up work agreed and completed. If further work after the initial meeting is required this is charged out as follows.
Hourly rates
This is the traditional method of charging for legal services. These figures are correct for 2008 and are reviewed on 1st January each year.
• For the Principal Solicitor: £150 per hour
• For a Solicitor: £125 per hour
• For Trainee Solicitor/Paralegal: £100 per hour
Travel and waiting times (if applicable) will be charged out at half the above rate. Mileage (if applicable) is charged out at 45p per mile.
Fixed fees
Fixed-fees are possible for certain types of work (e.g. the production of wills, lasting powers of attorney etc). Please enquire for details of fixed-fee work. A quote for the work involved in the preparation of documents can usually be given over the phone after a short conversation.
Contingent fees
Sometimes referred to as "no-win, no fee" agreements, these can be available to help fund all or part of a case. Generally, these may be appropriate for cases where compensation or damages are being claimed. This is a technical area and the type of agreement will depend on whether the claim is regarded in law as "contentious" or "non-contentious".
Insurance-backed advice
Depending on whether you are bringing or defending a claim, the type of claim and its merits (prospects of success) it may well be the case that you will be covered by some pre-existing legal expenses insurance. This can be a free-standing policy or part of a buildings/contents or motor or other insurance policy. You may be covered by an employer's or trade union scheme. If so, the costs of the legal work performed may be met by the insurer.
Legal aid
We have a contract with the Legal Services Commission (Legal Aid Board) to provide legal advice and assistance in the categories of Mental Health and Community Care law. So, subject to financial eligibility, we can provide (generally) free legal advice and assistance in these areas. Representation at a Mental Health Review Tribunal is always free.
Please feel free to contact us about our charges.
All professional charges are subject to VAT and disbursements are separate to charges for time.
A cap on costs can be agreed at the outset of a matter or as the matter progresses.
